New China courses at Emory and Georgia Tech

A new course, “Chinese Language, Culture and Society,” is being developed jointly by Professors Yu Li in the Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures at Emory and Jin Liu in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech. Professor Li is offering the course at Emory for the first time this Spring, 2014.

The course focuses on the intersection of language, culture, and society in contemporary China. In particular, it investigates the linguistic construction of social identities based on gender, ethnicity, age, power relation, and other factors, and the linguistic and cultural ideologies that shape language use in China and in the global Chinese diaspora.

At Emory the instruction and assignments will be in English, but Chinese language proficiency at the intermediate level or above is required to fully understand the linguistic material. The course prerequisite is a minimum two years of Chinese language study.

As part of the course at Emory this spring, several well-known scholars in the field will give presentations that will be open to the general public. These will be advertised in Events once finalized.
