Professor Perry Link: CRC's 5th Annual Lecture

The China Research Center’s 5th Annual Lecture was given by Professor Perry Link. Professor Perry Link is Professor Emeritus, Princeton University, and Chancellorial Chair for Innovative Teaching Comparative Literature & Foreign Languages at the University of California, Riverside. Professor Link gave two presentations. The first, entitled “An Anatomy of Chinese: Rhythm, Metaphor, Politics” was based on his book An Anatomy of Chinese recently published by Harvard University Press. The second presentation “A Tale of Two Nobels: Liu Xiaobo and Mo Yan” dealt with questions such as what is the writer's place in China today? What should it be? What responsibilities does a writer have to readers? To the state? To art? To moral principle? Professor Link used the examples of China's two recent Nobel Prize winners, Liu Xiaobo for peace, and Mo Yan for literature, to explore some contrasting answers.

The annual event took place on February 21, 2013 at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The CRC annual event was co-sponsored by the Hong Kong Association of Atlanta, Georgia Tech’s School of History, Technology and Society; and The School of Modern Languages (Guest Lecturer Series).
