Taiwan has seen a year of political developments with major implications for its role in Asia. In March, students occupied the legislature in to protest a contentious services trade agreement with mainland China. Just two months later, the island welcomed the highest-ever official visitor from the mainland to talk tourism and trade. Local elections this fall will in part hinge on the question of deeper cross-strait ties.But Taiwan faces a conundrum: Closer ties with China are the ticket to deeper trade ties with the world, but they also set off political fears at home.Global Atlanta traveled to Taiwan in June to explore these issues and more.
