Pax Mercatoria in the Taiwan Strait

Since 2008, when Taiwan and China embarked upon their current path of rapprochement, China had not only signed a free trade agreement with Taiwan, but had also sent purchase missions and millions of tourists to Taiwan. China is, to Taiwan, both an adversary and profits at the gate. Will China use its enormous economic power to induce, deter, or possibly coerce Taiwan?

Professor Szu-Yin Ho Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies Tamkang University

HO SZU-YIN is a Professor at the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, Tamkang University. Formerly he was a professor at the Department of Political Science at National Chengchi University. Dr. Ho’s career included several positions in government and politics as well as in academia. Previously, Dr. Ho served as Deputy Secretary General of the National Security Council, Republic of China from 2008 to 2010; as a Deputy Convener at the National Policy Foundation from 2005 to 2008; as a Director of the Department of Overseas Affairs at the Kuomintang’s Central Committee from 2003 to 2008.Dr. Ho’s areas of expertise include international political economy, international relations, and survey analysis.
