The modern traditional arts of China, both visual and musical, embody central elements of Chinese culture, presenting approachable methods for understanding Chinese cultural and philosophical principles as they are present in traditional arts forms. In this lecture-demonstration-performance, the two artists will present live Chinese brush painting and calligraphy (Nan Liu) accompanied Chinese guzheng and guqin music (Haiqiong Deng). In addition to demonstrating basic musical and artistic techniques involved in their disciplines, they also highlight intersections between these genres as expressions of traditional and contemporary Chinese thought verbally, visually, and aurally. Designed to be interactive between the audience and performers, this presentation will allow audience members to approach the artists and watch the painting and playing processes from a close proximity.
The Emory Chinese Ensemble featuring Dr. Nan Liu and Haiqiong Deng Performing Arts Studio, 7:30 PM
The Emory Chinese Ensemble will be joined by guest musician Haiqiong Deng in presenting solo and ensemble repertoire for traditional Chinese instruments (guzheng, pipa, erhu, and ditzi). The performance will conclude with a concert performance of the musical-artistic collaboration featured in the preceding lecture.
