Honors include The John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and the Gutenberg-e Prize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My core geographical area of expertise is China, but my research focuses on interconnections in the Early Modern Period (1500-1800), on migration, on comparative military history, and on the history of imperialism and colonialism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My first book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg-e.org\/andrade\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.gutenberg-e.org\/andrade\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684023177659000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0oA5feJDQ8FCBeiOhLnd1f\"><em>How Taiwan Became Chinese<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2007), examined how Dutch, Spanish, and Chinese colonization met and competed in the Far East and asked why it was that the Chinese prevailed over the Europeans rather than the other way around, suggesting that political will \u2013 that is to say state support for expansion \u2013 was a key variable. My second book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonioandrade.com\/#!lost-colony\/cnec\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.tonioandrade.com\/%23!lost-colony\/cnec&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684023177659000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0RASUfVw2e5tCdNV9jq3Ab\"><em>Lost Colony<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2011), examined the Sino-Dutch War of 1661-1668, Europe\u2019s first war with China and the only significant Sino-European conflict until the Opium War of 1839\u201342. It asked whether Europeans had \u2013 at this early date \u2013 any significant advantages in military and naval technology over China and concluded that they did, although not perhaps in the areas people might have expected. My third book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonioandrade.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.tonioandrade.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684023177659000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2nr4Y15L8zFrmCI4wNtUmh\"><em>The Gunpowder Age<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>(2016), looked more deeply into China\u2019s military past, comparing it to that of Europe, and showing that China\u2019s China\u2019s dynamism was deeper, longer lasting, and more quickly recovered than has long been believed. My fourth book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691177113\/the-last-embassy\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691177113\/the-last-embassy&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1684023177659000&amp;usg=AOvVaw01JkI4NvSoLxv6qwCw6ft3\">The Last Embassy<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>interrogated the fraught history of Chinese diplomacy and diplomatic cultures by examining a little-known embassy to China conducted by the Dutch East India Company in 1795.
