Challenges and Opportunities in the Midst of Sino-US Political and Economic Tensions

中美政治经济紧张局势下的挑战和机遇

China and United States are two giants in the east and the west. According to “U.S. Relationswith China (1949-2018)”, the Sino-US “relationships have evolved from tense standoffs to a complex mix of intensifying diplomacy, growing international rivalry, and increasinglyintertwined economies.” Politically and economically, the United States considers China a threat to US national security when China pursues its ‘China Dream’ and tries to build a ‘new relationship of great powers with the U.S.’. With intensified trade war between the two countries, the tensions of the two giants have been escalated, which has affected a broad range of areas such as cultural exchange, peaceful collaboration, and intellectual mutual respect. Nevertheless, challenges and opportunities coexist, and it will be critical to examine both in the midst of political and economic tensions. Therefore, the 2019 annual conference of the Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences in the United States invites papers and panels that focus on, but are not limited to, the following topics:

3. Ethical Standard and Social Justice (伦理道德和社会公正)
4. Medical Service and Public Health (医疗服务于大众健康)
5. Environment and Civilization (环境和文明)
6. Chinese Language, Culture and Confucius Institute (中文教育,文化与孔子学院)
7. Public Media and Mass Communication (公共媒体与大众传播)
8. AI and Scientific Development (人工智能与科技发展)
9. New Global Economic and Political Order (全球化政治经济的新秩序)
10. Migration and Immigration (迁移与移民)

Submission Guidelines:

Deadline: The submission deadline is August 4th, 2019. We require that those whose paper abstracts are accepted submit their full papers no later than September 1st, 2019.

Language: The conference will accept papers in both English and Chinese.

Required submission information: All paper abstracts or panel proposals must include the title, the author(s) or panel members, details of current position, the institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address for each author or panelist.

Papers that are accepted for presentation at the conference could be considered for publication by American Review of China Studies – the official journal of ACPSS. After the conference, the collection of the conference papers and abstracts will be published on CNKI (中国知网).

Conference Registration Fees:

ACPSS member with paper: $150
Non-ACPSS member with paper: $220
Student with paper: $80
Attendance with no paper: $240

As in past years, several points of distinction will mark this year’s conference:

Special Issue: A special issue from the conference will be published by the International Journal of Emerging Markets, an Emerald journal that is indexed and ranked by Scopus and ABS. Awards: A number of awards will be given to recognize excellent contributions, including best paper, best reviewer, and best PhD paper awards. The best paper awards will also confer on the recipient priority review to the International Journal of Emerging Markets.
