China Research Center’s conference on doing business in China was held on February 7th at the Student Auditorium at Georgia State University. Approximately 150 people attended the day-long event. Center Associates gave eight panel presentations throughout the day. Mr. Lu Jianguang from the Chinese Consulate in Houston spoke about opportunities for U.S. companies and ways that the Consulate could assist. A wide range of expertise was shared on the dynamic political and economic changes occurring in China at its present stage of development. Two companies—Automated Logic and World Travel BTI—also shared their experiences with the China and Asian markets. Dr. Robert Kapp, the President of the U.S.-China Business Council in Washington, D.C., gave the luncheon presentation. Dr. Kapp pointed out that many small and medium sized companies were successfully venturing into the China market now that the options of partners, distribution and sectors have expanded. He emphasized, however, that this continues to be a challenging market for big and small alike. He discussed the growing sources of assistance for U.S. companies looking to do business in China that are available in both the public and private sectors. The conference was made possible through the generous support of the Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University, the College of Arts & Sciences at Georgia State University, Troutman Sanders, KPMG, and the Competitive Edge Magazine. The Conference also benefited from assistance from the Georgia Tech CIBER, The Southern Center for International Studies, the National Association of Chinese Americans and the U.S. Commerce Department’s Atlanta Export Assistance Center.
